Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.
Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Players are granted the option to question particular decisions made by the chair umpire, mirroring the practice already in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This move arrives only a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can request.
A Recent Example
A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.
Further Updates
Another innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.
Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
